Every cabin on the MS Roald Amundsen is an outside cabin, and half have a private balcony. All have a private bathroom with shower, TV, safe and minibar.

A few things fall outside the package price and are worth budgeting for as you plan:

• International flights to and from Buenos Aires
• Extra hotel nights in Buenos Aires
• Travel insurance
• Luggage handling
• Optional small-group activities such as kayaking, camping and snowshoeing
• Optional pre- and post-cruise programs
• Spa treatments
• Extra checked bags on the charter flights (HX lists €40 per bag, each way)

Insider Tips

• Why January? Long daylight hours, penguin chicks, strong whale activity and some of the mildest weather of the season.
• The Drake Passage can be rough. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about seasickness remedies before you go.
• Pack light for the charter. Flights to Ushuaia allow one checked bag up to 23 kg and one carry-on up to 8 kg.
• Kayaking and camping are booked on board and spaces are limited, so sign up as soon as you can.
• Take the polar plunge if you're brave. It's a highlight many guests talk about for years.
• Visit the Science Centre early. It's the heart of the ship, with lectures, workshops and a small library.
• Wi-Fi is included but doesn't support streaming, so download shows and music before you leave.

Flights

Getting to Buenos Aires

Fly into Buenos Aires Ezeiza International Airport (EZE). Most flights from Toronto travel overnight and arrive in the morning. We can help you find the best routing from Toronto, Waterloo or Hamilton.

Buenos Aires to Ushuaia

Your economy flights between Buenos Aires and Ushuaia are included. HX charters typically leave between 8:00 and 11:30 am, and final times are confirmed at your hotel.

Returning Home

On January 20 the return charter usually lands in Buenos Aires around 7:00 pm. HX recommends booking your flight home from Ezeiza after 11:00 pm, or the next day.

Transfers

Transfers are included in your package. Once we know everyone's flights and hotel plans, we can help with any extra transfers.

Travel Insurance

Before you travel, take a few minutes to review the coverage you may already have through your work benefits, a credit card, or an existing policy.

Zodiac Landings

Most days in Antarctica, small Zodiac boats take you ashore to walk among penguin colonies and see the ice up close. On other outings you'll cruise between icebergs looking for seals and whales. Boots, poles and equipment are provided, and every landing is escorted by the Expedition Team.

Sea Kayaking

Glide between ice floes in near silence, with the Expedition Team guiding the way. HX offers a Guided Sea Kayaking Adventure (€199) and a shorter Discovery Kayak (€129). Both are booked on board, subject to availability and conditions.

A Night Ashore

For the truly adventurous, spend a night on the Antarctic continent. Choose a bivy bag under the open sky (€350) or a tent (€439). Camping is booked on board and depends on weather and ice conditions.

Science Program

The Science Centre is the heart of the ship, with touch screens, science equipment, lecture spaces and a small library. The Expedition Team leads talks on Antarctic history, wildlife and climate, along with workshops in photography and biology. Daily briefings keep you up to date on the plans for each landing.

Packing List

Clothing

Dress in layers: thermal base layers, a warm fleece or mid-layer, and waterproof pants for Zodiac landings. Your wind and waterproof expedition jacket is provided. Add a warm hat, a neck gaiter, and waterproof gloves with liners. Pack casual clothes for on board and summer clothes for Buenos Aires.

Footwear

Boots for landings are provided. Bring warm wool socks, comfortable shoes for the ship, and walking shoes for the city.

Sun & Rain

Sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen and lip balm are a must. The sun reflects strongly off snow and ice.

Extras

Binoculars, a camera with spare batteries, seasickness remedies, and a small dry bag. Argentina uses type C and I plugs at 220 volts, so bring an adapter. Remember the charter flight limit of one 23 kg checked bag and one 8 kg carry-on.

Weather Tips

January in Antarctica

January is midsummer in Antarctica, with very long days and some of the best wildlife viewing of the year. Conditions change quickly, so be ready for wind, snow and bright sun on the same day.

Temperatures

Around the Antarctic Peninsula, expect temperatures near freezing, roughly −5°C to +5°C, and occasionally milder. Ushuaia is cool, with highs in the low teens. Buenos Aires is hot and humid in January, often around 30°C.

Sun Protection

Even when it's cold, the sun is strong and glare off the ice is intense. Wear sunglasses and sunscreen on every landing.

Money & Currency

Local Currency

Argentina uses the Argentine peso (ARS).

Cards vs. Cash

Credit cards are widely accepted in Buenos Aires and Ushuaia. Carry a small amount of cash for taxis and small purchases. Let your bank know your travel dates before you go.

Onboard Spending

Purchases on board are charged to your shipboard account and settled at the end of the voyage. Meals, drinks and gratuities are already included.

Documents

Passport

HX requires a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the end of your trip. For this sailing, that means valid until at least July 20, 2028.

Medical Screening Form

HX requires every guest to complete a Medical Screening Form through the Vikand Medical portal before sailing to Antarctica. For group bookings, the form opens 90 days before departure. We'll remind you when it's time.
