Insider Tips

• The Volendam is a mid-sized ship carrying about 1,432 guests, so it's easy to find your way around and spot your group.
• Bring binoculars. Scenic cruising days on the St. Lawrence and the Gulf are a great chance to watch for whales and seabirds.
• Saint-Pierre is part of France. Bring a few euros for a café stop.
• Pack layers. September mornings on deck can be cool and breezy, even on sunny days.
• Arrive in Montréal the day before. It's an easy, relaxed way to start the trip.

Getting to Montréal

Getting to Montréal

Fly into Montréal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL) from Toronto Pearson or another nearby airport. The train from Toronto (VIA Rail) and driving are also good options from Waterloo Region. The cruise terminal is in the Old Port, close to downtown.

Returning Home

The ship returns to Montréal on Saturday, September 11. Plan a flight or train home for the afternoon to give yourself time to leave the ship and get to the airport or station.

Once we know everyone's travel and hotel plans, we can help arrange transfers to and from the ship.

Where to Stay

Pre-Cruise

Spend at least one night in Montréal before sailing. Old Montréal and downtown hotels keep you close to the Old Port and its restaurants. Be sure to tell your hotel your arrival time, especially with a late arrival.

Getting to the Port

From Old Montréal or downtown, the cruise terminal is a short taxi ride. We can also help arrange a transfer.

Post-Cruise

Add a night after the cruise if you'd like more time in the city, or head straight home on September 11.

Travel Insurance

Before you travel, take a few minutes to review the coverage you may already have through your work benefits, a credit card, or an existing policy.

Check what's included for out-of-country medical, trip cancellation, and trip interruption, and note any limits or exclusions. Remember that Saint-Pierre is part of France, so you'll be outside Canada for a day.

Where your current coverage falls short, we recommend topping it up so you're fully protected for the trip.

Old Québec

Old Québec is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the only walled city in North America north of Mexico. Stroll the narrow streets of the Lower Town, ride the funicular up to the Château Frontenac, and enjoy French-influenced cuisine in a sidewalk café.

The Saguenay Fjord

The Saguenay River runs through a deep fjord carved by glaciers, lined with tall cliffs and forests. It's a beautiful spot for scenery, nature and a taste of Québec's regional culture.

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

Known as the birthplace of Confederation, Charlottetown is a walkable, friendly capital with heritage buildings and a lively waterfront. Beyond the city, PEI's red sand beaches and rolling farmland are close by, and the island's seafood is a must.

St. John's, Newfoundland

One of the oldest cities in North America, St. John's is famous for the colourful row houses of Jellybean Row. Visit Signal Hill for views over the harbour, or head out to Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America.

Clothing

Layers are key: t-shirts, long sleeves, a warm sweater or fleece, and comfortable pants. Bring a few smarter outfits for dinner on board.

Footwear

Comfortable walking shoes for cobblestones and hills in Québec City and St. John's, plus shoes for evenings on board.

Sun & Rain

A waterproof jacket with a hood, a light hat and gloves for chilly decks, sunglasses and sunscreen.

Extras

Binoculars for whale watching, a small day bag, any medications in your carry-on, and your passport. Canada uses the same plugs as at home.

Weather Tips

September in Atlantic Canada

Early September is a lovely time to visit, with late-summer days and the first hints of fall colour. Weather along the coast can change quickly, and fog is common around Newfoundland and Saint-Pierre.

Temperatures

Expect daytime highs from the mid-teens to the low 20s °C, with cooler evenings and breezy days at sea.

Sun Protection

Even on cool days, the sun on the water is strong. Pack sunscreen and sunglasses.

Money & Currency

Local Currency

Montréal, Québec City, Saguenay, Charlottetown and St. John's all use the Canadian dollar. Saint-Pierre is part of France and uses the euro.

Cards vs. Cash

Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in all ports. A small amount of cash is handy for tips and small purchases.

Onboard Spending

Purchases on board are charged to your shipboard account and settled at the end of the voyage.
